Find, Race, Trace: Navigator's Guide
This activity is designed as a high-energy, "no-prep" way to get students moving while reinforcing number recognition and fine motor skills.
1. Preparation
Print: Provide each student with a Math Miles Pit Stop Tracing Sheet (e.g., the Race Track Pit Stop sheet).
Hide: Before students arrive, hide matching number cards or small manipulatives (plastic numbers) around the room.
Materials: Students will need a pencil or crayon for tracing.
2. The "Find" Phase (The Hunt)
Instruct students to move around the room to find the hidden numbers that correspond to the numbers on their Pit Stop sheet.
Once a student finds a number, they must call out, "Pit Stop!" or run back to their desk/workspace.
3. The "Race" Phase (The Speed Round)
This is where the "Race" element comes in. Students are racing against themselves (or a partner) to return to their sheet as quickly as possible.
Modification: If playing in partners, one student acts as the "Runner" (finding the number) and the other acts as the "Tracer" (verifying the number and tracing it on the sheet). They then switch roles.
4. The "Trace" Phase (The Finish Line)
After finding the number, the student returns to their sheet to trace the corresponding numeral.
Encourage proper pencil grip and deliberate, slow tracing to ensure quality formation—remind them that even professional race car drivers must be careful in the pits!
Tips for Success
Gamify: Use a timer to see if the class can complete their sheets before the time runs out.
Visual Cues: If you are focusing on a specific set of numbers (e.g., 0–5 or 0–10), limit the number of cards hidden in the room to just those values to prevent confusion.
Progression: As students master The First Journey (0–5), move them up to the higher number sets included in the Math Miles series. (Workbook version can be found on Amazon | Digital download version can be found on TPT.)
Frustration-Free: Limit the hidden cards to only the numbers you are currently focusing on (e.g., 0–5 or 0–10) to keep the "Pit Stop" frustration-free!
