April National Frog Month

A "Write the Room" game is a fantastic way to get students moving while practicing handwriting and shape identification. Since it's National Frog Month, this version focuses on finding "lily pad" shapes hidden around your classroom.

Activity Setup

  • Preparation: Print out 10–12 frog or lily pad cards, each featuring a different shape (Circle, Rhombus, Heart, Crescent, Hexagon, etc.).

  • The Hunt: Tape these cards at various heights around the room—behind bookshelves, on the door, or near the window.

  • The Gear: Give each student a "Shape Detective" recording sheet and a clipboard.

How to Play

  1. The Mission: Tell the students they are "Scientific Illustrators" tasked with finding all the rare geometric frogs hiding in the pond (the classroom).

  2. Search & Record: When a student finds a card, they look at the shape, identify it, and write the name of the shape next to the corresponding number on their sheet.

  3. The Bonus: For older students, have them draw the shape or write one attribute (e.g., "3 sides") next to the name.

Shapes to Include

To align with your current resources, you can use these 12 shapes:

  • The Basics: Circle, Square, Triangle, Rectangle.

  • The Curves: Oval, Heart, Crescent.

  • The Polygons: Star, Diamond (Rhombus), Pentagon, Hexagon, Octagon.

Resources for Your Game

To save time on prep, you can utilize these existing materials to create your cards and recording sheets:

Pro-Tip: Play some ambient "pond sounds" (frogs croaking, water splashing) in the background to make the activity feel like a true outdoor adventure!
